Roof Runoff Management / Underground Outlets

By installing roof runoff facilities, storm water from roofs can be collected, controlled, and disposed of away from barnyards and fields. Crawford County receives its fair share of rain each year which can cause barnyards to become muddy and hard to manage. While the clean rainwater travels through the barnyard, it becomes contaminated by manure, sediment, and other barnyard pollutants.

BEFORE: This roof lacks sufficient downspouts and has no underground outlets, causing water to flow through the barnyard.

How is it addressed?

There are a couple options for controlling roof runoff:

  1. The installation of roof gutters, downspouts, and underground outlets adequately removes excess water away from structures and the barnyard. The type and size of materials used is dependent on the amount of water and location.
  2. Dripline drains are another option for controlling surface water. 18″+ trenches are excavated around the building and filled with washed gravel or crushed stone in conjunction with subsurface drains or erosion resistant channels.

AFTER: This roof has had gutters and downspouts installed to keep a heavy use area dry. The water is channeled underground and is dispersed below the barnyard.

Approximate Cost = $5.00 per foot

The result is:

  • Dry barnyards
  • Reduced soil erosion & water damage
  • Improved water quality
  • Increase infiltration
  • Improved herd health
